Have you read some of the young adult stuff out there today? Listened to the radio? Scrolled through Twitter?

MP900386058The world is screaming one loud message.

BE YOURSELF,

and it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Now, I completely agree with that.

However, I think there’s a massive lie forming in the Macklemore lyrics, Tumblr feeds, and 140 characters of Twitter.

They tell you it doesn’t matter what you look like, and then they show you picture after picture of waif’s with big eyes and hardly any clothes on.

They tell you everybody does it, and then they treat the teens who’ve decided to abstain from sex, alcohol, and drugs like freaks and losers.

They tell you we’re all equal, and then they throw anyone who believes differently than they do under the bus.

They tell you that love is being with whoever you want, but then they assure you that whoever you want doesn’t have to stay the same.

They tell you that life’s the sum of your experiences, but then they say that it doesn’t matter what you do.

Society has sold one huge lie, and I believe many of us are buying it without question.

It’s time to challenge the status quo.

That’s what I want my stories to do—challenge beliefs, lifestyles, and the norm.

My promise to you is to tell the truth, not candy-coat the hard stuff, and create real and relatable characters. Life’s hard enough to cross through without being brainwashed into believing that we’re only as good as our stereotype. We all need examples of people struggling and surviving, and that’s what I hope to portray. Humanity, loved not lost.
