Recently, I was with some friends and we were all sharing about what’s been going on in our lives, and before I could say anything, one of my friends looked at me and said, “So you’ve been really busy, anything else been going on?” And in the space of two nano seconds, it hit me. I either need to slow my life down or stop whining about it.
About a year ago I started “Operation Slow Down.” That was my attempt at not living at such a rushed pace. I aimed to say “no” to optional opportunities and intentionally plan my routes so that I could have more time at home. That worked for a little while, but it’s long gone now.
I’m a firm believer, though, that we’re only as busy as we allow ourselves to be. I don’t have to be working five part-time jobs. I can slow down.
We get one shot at this life we’re living. I don’t want to be the person who looks back and thinks “I wish I would’ve taken time to listen more, to think about God, the universe and everything. I wish I would’ve gone deeper, climbed higher, and learned to be still.”
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10
The older I get, the faster life seems to go. Days aren’t 24 hours anymore. They’re over in the blink of an eye. Can I change that? Can I slow down time? I don’t know. But I suppose the change will have to start with me. How are you doing with your life? Too busy? Take a few minutes out of your day to just sit and stare out the window, look at a sunset, find that bird that keeps chirping, or write an email to an old friend. And remember that there’s more to life than your next appointment or your chore list. There is God, and he will be exalted. Will your life show that?
